Aug. 19—GREENWICH — Greenwich firefighters and emergency responders were called to three separate truck accidents on Interstate 95 Sunday, causing extensive traffic delays. In one crash, the tractor-trailer went over the side of the road and the driver had to be rescued.

“Very busy day,” said Assistant Chief Charlie Lubowicki.

Three trucks jack-knifed during the morning hours on I-95, the fire department said, in a series of unrelated incidents at 7:31, 9:32 and 10:06 a.m., all while the rain was pouring.

During the second crash of the day, a tractor-trailer went over the side of the road near Exit 2, closing the southbound lanes for an extended period of time. The driver had to be extricated from the cab but did not require hospitalization.

No major injuries were reported during the heavy rainstorm, though one person was transported to the hospital following the third accident on I-95, Lubowicki said.

In total, the fire department responded to some 20 calls for service during the Sunday storm.

“A lot of water in the basement,” said the assistant fire chief.

As for downed trees and wires, Greenwich police Lt. Patrick Smyth said Doubling Road was closed for a time due to a tree that had fallen across the road.

“But otherwise the local roads were pretty good,” he said.

In a Monday statement, the police department said the town experienced “minor impacts” from the rain.

“The Town of Greenwich had some minor street flooding, a tree that fell, causing a road closure, and brief power disruption for a few residents in town, but overall, we are thankful the town didn’t experience any major issues,” the statement read. “As a community, we must ensure we do not become complacent and realize an emergency can happen at any time that can impact our ability to travel, access power, banking, or communicate with our family and friends.”

The department encouraged residents to sign up for emergency alerts at www.GreenwichAlerts.org and to research how to prepare for future storms at www.ready.gov/plan.
