Jordon Jones, 39, was rescued from an exploding car by firefighters and a pizza delivery driver last week.

“I want people to recognize the heroes that saved my son,” said Diane Jones, Jones’ mother. “They risked their lives for someone they don’t know.”

On June 18, Jones, a Department of Defense employee, was heading to his home in Dundalk from martial arts training around 10 p.m. when he drove off the road into the woods near the intersection of Bowleys Quarters Road and Wye Road in Essex.

Larry Cook, a pizza delivery person for Seasons Pizza, was in the middle of a delivery when he said his phone died. According to Cook, as he looked away from his phone, he saw a car on fire in the woods.

“The whole front of the car was enflamed,” Cook said.

When he ran over to the car, he found Jones trapped inside. Cook said he tried to free Jones by kicking in the windows.

When Cook realized he couldn’t free Jones himself, he ran to his car and honked the horn until someone noticed. According to Cook, others came by to call first responders.

Bowleys Quarter Volunteer Fire Department responded at about 10:10 p.m. to the scene with 11 firefighters, the fire department said. A firefighter pulled Jones from the car while another extinguished the fire.

The car exploded shortly after Jones was rescued, Cook said. No firefighters were injured, but Jones was taken to a nearby trauma center for treatment.

Bowleys Quarters VFD personnel stayed on the scene with Baltimore County Police and the Baltimore County Fire Investigation Division for about an hour and a half, according to Bowleys Quarters VFD.

According to his mother, Jones might have lost consciousness because of a diabetic emergency. Jones is currently in the hospital being treated for third-degree burns and will remain in the hospital for three months.

Jones’ friends have created a GoFundMe for his medical expenses, his mother said.
