Sterling Rope builds training center for rope rescue

Sterling Rope Company, Inc., a manufacturer of life-safety rope and cord, has designed and built a new training center to be used by professionals to teach rope rescue and rope access techniques. In addition, use of this room will help Sterling design and develop new products. The elements in the room are designed for training, but are excellent for testing the function and durability of each new product. The Training Center is located inside Sterling’s manufacturing facility on Morin Street in Biddeford, Maine.

Sterling received a MTI grant to help design and build this room. World-renowned trainers were brought in to assist with the design to make sure that a maximum number of elements were included to provide a broad range of rescue and work situations. The room features a vertical drop area (opening to the floor below) to simulate rescues or bailouts from a height. The various training elements include: a window and parapet platform to train for personal escape and roof rescue, a ledge for vertical lifts, a tower for tower rescue. Future additions will include a tube-like structure for confined space training.

The vertical drop area is at one end of the Training Center. At the other end is a full size classroom complete with white boards, overhead projectors, computer hook-ups and Internet access. The classroom will seat up to 30 people comfortably. There is also a separate instructor’s room for prep work, set up or break out sessions.

The Sterling Training Center will be available for certified instructors fire departments, and industrial safety experts to use. Sterling will also offer basic rope rescue courses throughout the year. Sterling has offered rope rescue and mountain rescue training courses for the past nine years.
