Simmons Bedding Company Donates 114 Mattresses to Atlanta Fire Rescue Department

Simmons Bedding Company (“Simmons”) announces today that it will donate 114 Beautyrest mattresses to the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department (“AFRD”). The mattresses will outfit the bunkrooms of AFRD’s five airport stations and several expanded stations in Downtown Atlanta.

This donation marks the second year of the Simmons Firehouse Recharge Atlanta initiative (“Firehouse Recharge”). In its 2013 inaugural year, Simmons gave 269 mattresses to the 30 AFRD stations serving the city of Atlanta.

“We’re happy to do our part in supporting the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department’s lifesaving work in the City we’re proud to call home,” said Tony Smith, President of Simmons. “We look forward to continuing to expand our Firehouse Recharge initiative in its support of the heroes who protect all who work, live and play in Atlanta.”

Beautyrest mattresses are being delivered to Station 24 today, where firefighters, along with AFRD leaders, will accept the new mattresses on behalf of AFRD from Simmons President Tony Smith. Station 24 is one of the five fire stations that serve Hartsfield- Jackson Atlanta International Airport. AFRD personnel at these stations provide fire suppression and emergency medical services at the five concourses that comprise one of the world’s busiest airports. Ninety-four of the donated mattresses will go to the five airport stations, which employs nearly 100 of the city’s firefighters.

“As firefighters at one of the five fire stations that serve Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, we never know when we will be called into service,” said Station 24 Lt. Frank Swider.

“That makes it all the more important that we get the best rest possible. Our new mattresses, compliments of Simmons, help make that happen, and we are so thankful.”

Several stations in Downtown Atlanta will receive the remaining mattresses. They accepted mattresses as part of last year’s donation but are now in need of more due to station expansion.

“Station 15 is one of the busier fire companies in the City of Atlanta,” said Station 15 Firefighter Christopher Steinmann. “It is so nice to know that, when we do get a chance to lie down, we are not tossing and turning because our mattresses are lumpy and uncomfortable. We are truly grateful to Simmons for its generosity in providing comfortable mattresses that help ensure that we are in the best possible shape to serve the residents of Atlanta.”

Now in its second year, Firehouse Recharge aims to provide local first responders with the recharging sleep they need to perform their lifesaving duties for the community.

“The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department owes a significant debt of thanks to Simmons for its generous donation of brand new Beautyrest mattresses to our fire stations,” said Fire Chief Kelvin J. Cochran. “You have made it possible for us to provide the best service to this great City, and I hope you understand that every time we put out a fire or provide life-saving medical service, those achievements are shared by partners like Simmons. We hope this important partnership with Simmons continues and broadens as we move into the future.”
