Off-Duty CA Firefighter Rescues Child from Apartment Fire

An off-duty firefighter rescued a toddler early Wednesday from a burning apartment where a woman was found dead in Murrieta, California.

The Press-Enterprise reported (http://bit.ly/TYawl1) that Jason Patterson, 36, carried a three-year-old boy to safety then went back in an attempt to knock down the fire with a fire extinguisher.

The child would not have survived if it hadn’t been for Patterson, who is a seasonal firefighter assigned to Cal Fire Station 14 in Norco. A fire official said firefighters would not have been able to reach the child in time, as there was a flashover in the apartment as Murrieta fire crews entered the two-story building a few minutes after fire was reported at 6:45 a.m.

Police have said the woman’s death was suspicious but have disclosed little about their investigation.
