New Carlisle (IN) Firefighter Killed in Building Collapse

New Carlisle (LaPorte County) Assistant Fire Chief Jamie Middlebrook was killed Tuesday night in a large business fire, reports wsbt.com (http://bit.ly/1lzvDZX).

The fire broke out sometime around 8 p.m. at K-Fex, an excavation business at 5885 North and 800 East.

Officials tell WNDU-TV and WSBT-TV that members of the New Carlisle fire department were inside the building Tuesday night when a roof collapsed. Middlebrook’s body was found a few hours later.

Information on the severity of the injuries to the other firefighter wasn’t immediately available.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, Assistant Fire Chief Middlebrook, 40, died from injuries sustained when the roof of a burning commercial storage building collapsed on him and another firefighter. Reports indicated that the other firefighter sustained a broken ankle and minor burns. Investigation into the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State of Indiana Fire Marshal’s office.
