Haz-mat accident report issued

A report on the level of emergency planning and preparedness for hazardous materials accidents in Delaware was presented at a briefing.

Rep. Thomas R. Carper of Delaware, part of the Congressional Task Force on Toxic Emergencies, is the first of 16 members to release a report.

Over 175 surveys were sent to Delaware fire and police departments, public officials, and chemical companies. Of those surveyed, 65% responded.

More than 92% of the fire departments said their emergency response plans had been coordinated with state and county plans. Twenty-seven percent of local officials said they had contacted industry to coordinate emergency planning efforts.

Two-thirds of fire departments said they had received assistance from CHEMTREC. Chemical Manufacturers Association (CMA) member companies that participated in the Delaware survey include: Allied-Signal, CibaGeigy, Diamond Shamrock, Reichhold, Stauffer, Sun-Olin, and Texaco.
