Firefighters rescued several other tenants from the top floor of the burning, three-story building using ladders because the fire and heavy smoke on the floor below had trapped people in their apartments. In some instances, people were hanging out of their windows and calling for help when firefighters arrived.

According to the report, about four dozen firefighters were called to put out the fire.
