Claremore (OK) Firefighter Drowns During Flood Rescue

A Claremore firefighter’s body was recovered early Sunday after he was swept away while performing a water rescue, reports newson6.com.

Claremore Fire Chief Sean Douglas said the firefighter was attempting to rescue a fellow firefighter who had fallen into a flooded storm drain near Archer Court and Highway 20 just west of Claremore. 

Douglas said one firefighter was able to make it out of the storm drain alive.  He was taken to the hospital to be checked out.  Douglas said the death is a tragic loss for the department and the city of Claremore. 

The body of the other firefighter was recovered around 1 a.m. His name has not been released.

From the U.S. Fire Administration, 5/26/2015: At 2230hrs on May 23, the Claremore Fire Department was called to rescue about 10 people caught inside of several residential units due to rising flood waters. While assisting with the water rescue, Captain Jason Farley, 46, was swept into a flooded storm drain where he got trapped and drowned. Captain Farley’s body was recovered approximately two hours after the water rescue began. Another firefighter who was also swept into the storm drain suffered non-fatal injuries. All of the residents were rescued without injury.
