Big Rig Rescue Training course offered at North Carolina college

The Emergency Services Training Center is once again offering BIG RIG RESCUE training. This training is very equipment and scenario intensive and thus cannot be offered at individual departments. All courses will be offered at the ESTC where permanent, realistic scenarios are being developed.

The Big Rig Rescue program will offer comprehensive training in the following topics: Air Bag/Cushion rescue systems, Timber Cribbing/Strut Support Operations, The Triangle of Stability, the 5 Step Discipline for Overturns and Under-rides and Winching Fundamentals. You will face very challenging yet realistic scenarios including concrete mixer overturn onto a smaller vehicle, van trailer under-ride, tanker overturn onto an auto, bobtail tractor under-ride and much more. Come learn and test your new knowledge and skills! You will not be disappointed!

The featured presenter will be Billy Leach, Jr. Billy is recognized as the developer and Sr. presenter of Big Rig Rescue and has presented the program at FDIC, Firehouse Magazine’s Expo, FDNY’s Technical Rescue School and many other venues.

This program will feature two days of both classroom and Hands-On learning. Class meets from 0800 to 1730 on Saturday and 0800 to 1500 on Sunday. Class size will be limited to ensure maximum hands-on opportunities for each student. Classes will be filled on a first come basis and pre-registration is required. Classes are expected to fill up quickly so please respond as soon as possible. A sign up sheet is enclosed for the fall courses. Please list all of those members of your department who plan to attend these courses and return to the ESTC by Monday, October 23rd for the October course and Monday, November 6th for the November course.

North Carolina Emergency Responders are exempt from the registration fee. Out of state participants will pay the registration fee of $55.00. All students will pay $10.00 for the student manual and CD and $1.25 for required student insurance. We will be glad to bill the department with a letter of authorization from the department. Students who do not have an authorization letter will be expected to pay all costs the first day of class.

Students are expected to furnish the following (without exception):

Helmet
Full length protective clothing (fire resistant heavy duty coveralls are acceptable)
Safety glasses or goggles (helmet shields are not sufficient)
Gloves
Protective footgear
Small battery operated calculator
Pen/pencil

Comprehensive, realistic scenarios will allow you to apply the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom session. This course is hands-on intensive and participants should be physically fit and able to work in a team environment. Students will be required to purchase accident insurance through the college due to the inherent dangers of the training.
