Successful ventilation tactics begin with knowing fire dynamics and the impact of ventilation on fire behavior. Several key fire dynamic concepts regarding fire development and ventilation control are highlighted along with FDNY’s tactics specific to fire-resistive and non fire-resistive multiple dwellings. Today, every firefighter and fire officer should know and understand the following: heat release rate, flow path, ventilation profile, and ventilation-limited fire. Armed with this knowledge, the firefighter and the fire officer will be able to implement tactics that coordinate ventilation with suppression and allow victims the best chance of survival.
