OSHA REFORM: A DANGEROUS BUSINESS FOR THE AMERICAN FIRE SERVICE?

Currently under consideration by the 103rd Congress are several bills that would reform or modify the federal OSHA program and subsequently state-plan OSHA states. Some of these bills could result in a substantial regulatory and financial impact on municipal fire department personnel and management officials from the company officer level through that of fire chief.

We're still talking about basic hand tool uses for truck functions. Last month we were in the middle (near the end) of hook (pike pole) tactics. We talked about pulling different types of ceiling material. But where do you pull? In high-rise office buildings, open a small area into the plenum as soon as you leave the elevator lobby.

Emergency medical services are included as a routine element of most dispatch assignments for fire responses. Unfortunately, most fireground operational plans relegate the EMS crews to “standing by” in case of civilian or firefighter injury. This is a waste of an important fireground resource and overlooks the need to address an important firefighter safety and health issue.

Dimethylamine is a flammable, toxic, corrosive, irritating, colorless, foul, fishysmelling gas that usually is shipped as a liquid under its own pressure. At concentrations above 100 ppm (parts per million of air), the substance’s odor changes from fishy to ammonia-like.
