CHEMICAL DATA NOTEBOOK SERIES #100: ETHYL CHLORIDE

Elhyl chloride is a flammable, narcotic, anesthetic, corrosive, irritating, clear, colorless, highly volatile liquid with an ether-like odor and a burning taste. It is used as an aerosol propellant, anesthetic, insecticide, refrigerant, and solvent. It is used in the manufacture of drugs, dyes, ethylcellulose, tetraethyl lead, and many other chemicals.

HANDLING MULTIFATALITY INCIDENTS

Think back to the last disaster/mass-casualty drill your organization held. If it was typical of the hundreds of such drills held annually throughout the country, it involved a scenario dealing with an aircraft crash or exposure to a hazardous material; many different local agencies or groups that potentially may be involved in such an emergency participated;

SELF-SUFFICIENT FOAM UNIT

A December 1991 incident involving a spill of approximately 1,000 gallons of toluene at the BASF Chemical Plant, located adjacent to state and interstate highways and in a densely populated suburban community, made it painfully clear to the Lodi (NJ) Fire Department that it had to devise a way to ensure a ready supply of firefighting foam in its area.

REDIRECTING BEHAVIOR

You’ve finally been selected as the new chief of your volunteer organization. Most of the members (especially your buddies and pals) supported you. “Wow,” you say to yourself, “I did it.” Now comes all the good stuff—you know, the perks. When you drive by in that car with ail the cool equipment, people will know it's the chief. You'll be fitted for the uniform, get a new badge, and have authority.

APPARATUS DEIIVERIES

SVI TRUCKS, a division of SUPER VACUUM MANUFACTURING, INC., built this rescue truck for the Denver (CO) Fire Department. Given the expansion that has taken place within its jurisdiction during the past two decades, the department designed the unit to be as versatile as practical, reports Captain Don Macia. The area will undergo extensive construction that will include a new airport and a light rail system.
