Over the past year, a battle has raged within the fire service concerning the issue of minimum staffing and whether this minimum requirement should be placed in NFPA 1500, Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program. Different organizations have their own positions and have been vocal in attempting to persuade others of their views’ legitimacy.

Every once in a while an organization is given the chance to “make something happen.” Sometimes an opportunity presents itself that is definitely out of the ordinary and requires quick action and a willingness to take a risk. The Farmington Hills (MI) Fire Department was presented with such an opportunity when a local television station inquired about the possibility of conducting a live training burn to serve as the focus of a onetime, live, prime-time fire safety show.
