With the passage of cancer-presumption legislation in many states, including California, Rhode Island. Illinois, and Maryland, it is important for firefighters to document exposure to hazardous substances. Under this legislation, workers’ compensation will be paid to firefighters stricken with cancer if they can demonstrate relevant exposure.

Assigned to the outside vent position, you arrive on the scene of a working house fire, take a portable ladder and your partner, gain access to the porch roof, pop open a window, and climb inside the house. Once inside, you realize the home owner has done extensive remodeling and that what was once two bedrooms and a hallway is now one large room measuring 20 feet by 30 feet, with furniture and other obstacles in your way.

We have devised a unique method for connecting hose to the stationary pipe on our aerial ladders. The rack pictured below was made by welding steel strips to angle iron, both of which were cut to length. The unit then was bolted to the ladder brace.

After observing a portable pneumatic rescue pack system at an extrication competition in 1989, we decided to design our own system for our department’s extrication needs. We began by utilizing two backplates from out-of-service airpacks and riveting them together to form a single backplate that would accommodate two air cylinders.
