FIREFIGHTER RESPONSE TO TERRORIST BOMBS

Experts warn that terrorism may increase now that the war against Iraq has ended. It is time, therefore, for firefighters to bone up on techniques that can help them recognize and deal with bomb threats and terrorist attacks.

FIRE FOCUS

All fires in buildings under renovation bring a myriad of problems. Those in special occupancies, such as breweries, add a few more. Openings in floors for vats, inspection ladders, cranes, and other associated furnishings are covered (if at all) by flimsy material and may even be just planks for workmen to use in well-lit areas. Walls and ceilings are usually open, allowing for rapid fire spread.

FIRE LOSS MANAGEMENT

Part 26: PREPLANNING AND RECOVERY A Series by Casual fire suppression means relying on fire extinguishers being provided for the employee or bystander to use. CHEMICAL DATA NOTEBOOK SERIES #61: NITROGEN

Nitrogen is a nonflammable, nontoxic, colorless, ordorless gas that makes up about 78 percent of our atmosphere. It is generally inert or unreactive, and its uses reflect that property. It is used to fill light bulbs and thermometers, to provide an inert atmosphere for some industrial operations, and to synthesize various chemicals.

RANDOM THOUGHTS

What is a strategic factor? As some texts point out, the concept is derived and handed down from science. When applied to firefighting, it is an element(s) about a particular fire that if not adequately dealt with or overcome will result in losing more of the structure, breaking down command, or changing to a less aggressive strategy before injuries occur on the fireground.
