ARSON TASK FORCES

An arson task force involves state, local, and/or federal agencies combining resources, equipment, and personnel to combat the crime of arson. Statistics show that arson is a continuing problem. With tax limitations, budget restraints, possible hiring freezes, and insufficient staffing, how do we adequately handle the arson problem?

HAZARDS FOR THE FIRE INVESTIGATOR

Fire scenes present a host of hazards for fire investigators. We all are aware that investigating the fire scene while it’s still hot offers many advantages. However, many dangers continue to exist after firefighting activities are completed, and the knowledgeable investigator must recognize these hazards.

CONGRESS: YEAR IN REVIEW

List year will be remembered for indecision and last-minute panic on major issues: clean air, civil rights, crime, child care, and reform of agricultural programs. It will be remembered for the S&L mess, Senator Helm's attack on federally funded porno, the Hubble rubble, and the confirmation of a new Supreme Court justice.

1989 NFPA ARSON REPORT

Note: NFPA literature defines incendiary fires as those “for which hard evidence indicates the fire was deliberately set.” Suspicious fires are defined as those for which “less conclusive evidence” exists pointing to deliberate intent. Arson is the actual “crime of setting a fire." In 1989 the number of reported incendiary and suspicious structure fires throughout the nation declined by approximately 2,500, or 2.5 percent.
