NAMES IN THE NEWS

DENNIS M. SARGENT has been appointed chief of the Salt Lake City, Utah Fire Department. A 22-year veteran of the fire service, Sargent began his career in Cleveland in 1967. In 1971 he moved to Sarasota, Florida, where he advanced to battalion chief. In 1986 he was appointed chief of the Myrtle Beach (SC) Fire Department, where he served until his current appointment.

CHANGE

They tell us that change is for the better. And so it is my duty to report on changes that affect Fire Engineering. First, we’ve moved! Everyone likes to get out of the city and into the suburbs. Magazines are no different. Fire Engineering has left downtown Manhattan for the rolling hills of Saddle Brook, New Jersey, where we’ll be just as accessible and willing to help in any way.

Many people categorize the entire nongovernmental fire protection field by one vague term—the underwriters. They say, “The underwriters approved this” or “The underwriters didn’t approve that” or “Since the underwriters approved this, why are you concerned?” or “The insurance company is in business to not have losses, and they approved this, so it should be no problem for you.”
