ESCAPE FROM LARGE BURNING BUILDINGS

Most 19th-century cities experienced a great influx of immigrants. Housing abandoned by the rich served as residential housing for the poor. New York City, for one, required a huge number of multiple dwellings.

SODIUM

Sodium is a water-reactive, elemental metal. Its two most common synonyms are metallic sodium and natrium, the Latin word from which sodium gets its chemical symbol, Na. It is silvery in appearance until exposed to air, whereupon it turns grayish in color.

SINGLE-SLIDE ROPE RESCUES

The ability to evaluate a successful rope rescue or personal escape technique often is taken for granted both at the individual and departmental level. Many departments purchase a system of ropes, harnesses, and descent devices; establish special rope units to ensure care and maintenance; take careful inventory of equipment and place it in select storage bags; and print bulletins as to proper use.

TREATING VICTIMS

(Photo by Tom McCarthy.) When we think of treating victims, we usually think of a seriously bleeding victim of a vehicle or construction accident, industrial mishap, or stabbing or shooting. We tend to associate cervical collars, blood pressure cuffs, various dressings, gauze pads, bandages, splints, and resuscitators with these types of incidents.
