COLLEGE DECREES: AS EASY AS ABCs?

FIREFIGHTERS HAVE an increasing number of educational opportunities from which to choose. Unfortunately, some of these opportunities may seem too good to be true—and they often are. While some very good colleges offer quality higher education programs for the fire service, others are merely “diploma mills” — they offer degrees that aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.

HIGHER EDUCATION: Meeting Fire Service’s Changing Needs

AS THE FIRE service progresses and changes, so too must the education of its members. Not too long ago, the firefighter simply had to know basic fireground operations, and the fire officer had to master basic strategy and tactics.

FIRE LOSS MANAGEMENT

UNFRIENDLY CAUSES of fire are usually forces or actions that serve no practical purposes in and of themselves. The principal unfriendly causes of fire are lightning, static electricity, arson, metallic sparks, and spontaneous ignition.

Defensive Responding

“GET OUTT" shouts the firefighter at the watch desk. “All companies respond to North Third and Water streets! A reported house fire!” He acknowledges the receipt of the alarm, hits the button to raise the large firehouse doors, and hands the hard copy of the alarm location and address of the fire to the officer who is first to appear on the apparatus floor.

RESPONSE INJURIES IN THE VOLUNTEER SERVICE

FIREFIGHTER INJURIES and deaths suffered while responding to and returning from fires and other emergencies are the most frustrating of all, perhaps because they are usually so preventable. In assisting in the preparation of a safety and survival course for fire departments in the state of New York, I tried to be as “real world” as possible, especially in addressing the response and return injury category for volunteer firefighters.
