DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE DUMPSTER

IN A RECENT discussion at the firehouse kitchen table, the subject of dumpster fires came up. One firefighter relayed the following story: The engine company he was working with on a day tour responded to a “routine” dumpster fire. On arrival, the lieutenant ordered 1 3/4" preconnect hoseline stretched and charged, and the firefighters began to extinguish the fire.
HIGH-RISE TACTICS

HIGH-RISE TACTICS

“WE DON’T have highrises in our district. We’re not a big city department.” Most of us can no longer say that. Real estate values are prohibiting the construction of simple two-and three-story buildings. If you have a structure with occupancies that reach above your longest ladder, too high to enter from outside—where you need the building to get to the fire and you need the building to remove the life hazard— then you have a high-rise.

FIRE LOSS MANAGEMENT

EXTENSION is the second wheel of the “fire loss slot machine.” (See Fire Engineering, April ’89, page 48.) Remember that in the area of fire loss management, “extension” means more than just “physical extension of the fire.” Under the heading of extension we’ll consider kindling, methods of extension, surface spread, physical barriers to extension, structural damage, and fire load.
WRITING PUMPER SPECIFICATIONS THAT GET RESULTS

WRITING PUMPER SPECIFICATIONS THAT GET RESULTS

WRITING THE specifications for new apparatus has become a major challenge for fire departments. The various requirements placed on the fire service have made the task so complicated for some fire chiefs and administrators that they shy away from it. However, the task is not as daunting as it may seem if you take the time to plan before you write.

Motivating for Better Maintenance

Apparatus & Equipment THE FRANKFORT Fire Department, a 45-member volunteer department located 40 miles southwest of Chicago, Illinois, had a small-scale apparatus/equipment maintenance program. Two times a month, one fire apparatus engineer (FAE) would check an assigned vehicle against a list of parts to determine what repairs were necessary.
DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICIES

DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICIES

EVERY DEPARTMENT has or should have rules and regulations regarding drug abuse and use. These rules are generally very simple and state that members should not use alcohol or any illegal substances while on duty. Unfortunately, the issue is much too complex for this blanket statement.
