South Dakota receives federal aid for West Berry Trail fire

South Dakota will receive federal funds to help offset costs of fighting the West Berry Trail fire that began in late July and burned more than 3,800 acres of forest and grasslands. State officials estimate that cost will reach about $1.5 million. The Federal Emergency Management Agency will pay 70 percent of the state's eligible firefighting costs above $29,900 (the floor cost, based on a formula which includes the state's five-year annual average cost for fighting fires).

Four new fire prevention programs are available from Syndistar, Inc. "Smoke Detectors—The Silent Guardians" explains the value of smoke detectors and demonstrates proper installation and maintenance; "Fire Safety for Senior Citizens" includes tips on cooking, heating, and electrical safety for the elderly; "Using Fire Extinguishers" educates the viewer on the different types of extinguishers and their selection and proper use; and "When in Doubt, Call a Firefighter” gives tips on how to safely extinguish small fires, but emphasizes the need to call the fire department when necessary. All programs come in color slide or video format.

The International Association of Fire Chiefs seeks submissions for papers to be presented at its annual conference next year in Indianapolis. Anyone interested should submit a 75-word proposal to the association by Oct. 28. Committee members will select the proposals to be developed into papers for the conference.

Skolnik Industries, which manufacturers and markets steel containers, drums, and overpacks, has expanded its operation and moved to larger quarters in Chicago. According to Howard Skolnik, president and chief executive officer, the move more than doubles the company's operation, production, and warehousing facilities.

The on-campus course bulletin lists all offerings except the state weekend programs (information on those can be found in the Academy's 1988-89 Curriculum Catalog). On-campus courses include executive development; command and staff; hazardous materials; arson; fire prevention; training methods; and fire safety.

Fire death rate in America stable, according to NFPA study

The number of fire deaths last year remained constant with those of the mid80s, says the National Fire Protection Association, signifying a need to boost public education efforts and renew attention to smoke detectors. The NFPA surveyed fire departments throughout the country and found that 5,810 civilian fire deaths were reported last year.
