South Dakota receives federal aid for West Berry Trail fire

South Dakota will receive federal funds to help offset costs of fighting the West Berry Trail fire that began in late July and burned more than 3,800 acres of forest and grasslands. State officials estimate that cost will reach about $1.5 million. The Federal Emergency Management Agency will pay 70 percent of the state's eligible firefighting costs above $29,900 (the floor cost, based on a formula which includes the state's five-year annual average cost for fighting fires).

Computer Room Fires

Is there a computer room in your response area? If so, have you toured the facility? Are you familiar with the special characteristics of computer rooms that affect firefighting strategy and tactics? How would you handle a fire alarm for the facility? Would your actions take into account the costliness of computer equipment and the loss of the computing function to the affected company?

Tools and Equipment

Choosing specialized equipment and tools for rescue companies requires more than a Sunday flea market attitude. The number of manufacturers producing these items has increased to a point where the buyer, rather than the seller, can be selective. Careful consideration is usually given to price, but product reliability should always be the top priority for rescue operations.

Fire death rate in America stable, according to NFPA study

The number of fire deaths last year remained constant with those of the mid80s, says the National Fire Protection Association, signifying a need to boost public education efforts and renew attention to smoke detectors. The NFPA surveyed fire departments throughout the country and found that 5,810 civilian fire deaths were reported last year.

EQUIPMENT DIGEST

Avon Inflatables now offers its FRB-310 fire rescue boat with three inflation systems: CO-2, Scott Airpack, and footpump. Departments can choose between the two pressure options, either of which produces a fully-inflated rescue boat in iess than 30 seconds; the foot-pump is provided as a standard backup system for both.
Forcible Entry

Forcible Entry

Structural firefighting is best performed (hopefully) from inside the building. One of the first operations to be accomplished at any fire scene (after locating the fire) is entry. It's just as important to size up entry into a structure as it is to make a sizeup for any other tactical operation.
