The story reported on a male firefighter on the West Coast suspended for slapping a female firefighter on the backside and trying to grab her breasts while they were on duty. With a public and media that are pretty firmly on our side, I wonder why we sometimes go so far out of our way to look so bad. It's high time we put this crap behind us. Not too long ago, a similar assault in a New York City fire station kept the news media busy for weeks.

Fire service identity is part of the plan for FEMA’s Office of Training

After a controversy that lasted more than half a year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's new Office of Training finally opened just before Christmas. It combines all of FEMA's training programs in one office. But the man who's running it, John B.K. LaBarre, says, "I have every intention of keeping the National Fire Academy a separate entity that maintains its unique character and image."

APPARATUS DELIVERIES

Rather than replace its rusted 1976 Seagrave pumper, the Pattonville Bridgeton Terrace (Mo.) Fire Department gave it new life. The pumper was remanufactured by Southern Coach Inc. and returned to the department in March of last year. The pumper's steel body was replaced with aluminum; new doors were put on; the body was refabricated from the engine compartment rearward; a hydraulic ladder rack was installed; the pump was rebuilt; and a new booster tank and two high-sided compartments were added.

IAFC’s code involvement turns to sprinklers in the Southeast

A proposal to require automatic sprinklers in two types of residential structures more than three stories high is before the Southern Building Code Congress. Hotels and motels with 20 or more guest rooms, and multifamily dwellings with 15 or more units would have to have sprinklers installed while the buildings are under construction.
