Fire on Display

A classroom of young teenagers and preteens watched fire brighten the curtains hanging from a window, spread through the living room, and sweep up the chimney-like staircase. NIOSH warns against zinc chloride in training smoke, especially indoors

The National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety, or NIOSH, appears ready to put a wet towel over smoke-generating devices that produce zinc chloride atmospheres. By the time late summer seared its way onto the calendar, more than 1,000 square miles of vegetation had turned to cinders. Smoke was so thick that breathing the air in Northern California was like smoking 3 1/2 packs of cigarettes a day.
