FLSA amendments to become effective in April

The 1985 amendments to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) have been signed by President Ronald Reagan and will take effect April 15. The compromise bill, S.1570, is the result of a joint Congressional conference committee, which ironed out minor differences in two versions that were passed separately by the U.S.

The Fire Equipment Manufacturer's Association Inc. (FEMA) has established a fire hose division that will enable the manufacturers of fire hose to jointly address common opportunities and concerns. Originally established in 1932, FEMA Inc. is comprised of 22 United States and Canadian manufacturers of fire protection equipment.

Drop Dead!

In the past few months, the fire service community has been anticipating a negative attitude from the Federal Government with respect to future funding of the U.S. Fire Administration, the National Fire Academy, and the Bureau of Standards' Center for Fire Research. Our worst fears have been surpassed. The proposed budget for fiscal year 1987 has provided zero-funding for both the Fire Administration and the Center for Fire Research; and the impact of this on an already battlefatigued, understaffed fire academy promises to be even more debilitating.

I enjoyed the three articles in the May 1985 issue of FIRE ENGINEERING: "Preventing Live Burn Accidents"; "Do You Know Where Your Men Are?"; and "I'd Probably Put the Fire Out." These articles have appeared in one form or another in many fire magazines and books throughout the years.
