Mobile Sprinkler Training Unit

A portable training unit designed by the Greenacres City, Fla., Fire Department is used to train fire service and industry personnel throughout Florida in sprinkler systems operation. Wet and dry pipe sprinkler systems are mounted on the mobile facility, a 7 X 10-foot trailer, which also contains smoke and heat detectors, pull stations and annunciator panels.

The unforgettable tragedy that occurred in Boulder, Colo., in 1982 should have awakened many training officers to the fact that the methods used by many fire departments for producing smoke for training purposes should be studied carefully. The use of various fuels, chemical liquids, tires, tar paper, and used motor oil for producing thick black smoke is not a good idea.

Boston, Mass., is in the process of phasing out its 1420 fire alarm boxes, from which more than 3/4 of the city's 10,000 false alarms are turned in each year. The City of Boston, which covers 47.5 square miles, received a total of 47,000 alarms last year. Of the 10,000 false alarms received, approximately 77 percent came in through the city's street alarm boxes.
