To be a beautician in Pennsylvania, an applicant must complete 1250 hours of classroom training and practice as well as pass stiff written and practical examinations. In contrast, Pennsylvania's fire fighters, who operate equipment worth thousands of dollars, protect property worth millions, and are responsible for safeguarding countless human lives have absolutely no state-imposed requirements to demonstrate competency in fire fighting.

Earth-sheltered housing is becoming more and more common in Alabama, says Chief L. A. Marlowe, and it is starting to find a niche in communities across the United States.

Reflective trim adds dash of safety to apparatus

The addition of reflective trimming and numbering on the Bay City, Mich., Fire Department's apparatus is proving a cost-efficient means of making the trucks more visible, particularly at night, providing an extra degree of safety.

What Are You Afraid Of?

A survey of 3000 Americans found that what they feared most, even more than death, according to Fortune magazine, was speaking before a group. Assuming these results hold true for the fire service, and I don't know whether they would or not, it is an indication of many lost opportunities. A fire chief, fire officer or fire fighter must interact in an official capacity with many individuals outside his own fire company or department.
