Citizen Fire Prevention Group Celebrates 30th Anniversary

The emphasis on fire prevention has been especially strong in the Philadelphia Fire Department since 1952, when the new city charter dictated that fire prevention should be as important as fire suppression. At that time, the Citizen’s Fire Prevention Committees were formed, composed of leading figures in the worlds of business, safety and public relations.

A Code That Brings Results

For years the most dangerous place to live, from a fire safety standpoint, has been in a mobile home. A recent survey of mobile home fires (reported in this issue of Fire Engineering on page 22) shows that there has been a dramatic improvement in the fire safety of the newer mobile homes. The reason appears to be the enactment of the National Manufactured Housing and Construction and Safety Standard in 1976 by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.

National Foam Systems, Inc., is expanding its headquarters in Lionville, Pa., company president Donald N. Meldrum has announced. Foam truck manufacturing will be on two lines running end to end, from chassis to finished truck. A new machine shop using computer numerical control will allow machine part fabrication in one-tenth the present time in the 50,000 square foot expanded manufacturing space.

Obtituaries

Chief Robert W. Little Jr., who retired from the York, Pa., Fire Department in 1976, died July 22 at the age of 57 after a long illness. In the fire service for 30 years, Chief Little started as a volunteer fire fighter in 1946, and became the first volunteer of Lincoln Engine Co. 9 to become a paid fire fighter.
