Acting as an Instructor Is Duty of Every Officer

Whether they realize it or not, every officer in the fire service is an instructor to some degree. Even a chief of department becomes an instructor when he outlines a new policy to be implemented by his chief officers or when he assigns one or more officers to develop an administrative project. Company officers are responsible for the effectiveness of their companies—both on the fireground and in such non-fire activities as building inspections and equipment maintenance.

Newly Created Department Provides Full Services at Fire

A $500,000 fire involving townhouse units, garage facilities and autos occurred just 12 days after the Orange County, Fla., Fire Department was created last Oct. 1. Before the fire was extinguished, the new department organized available resources well enough to provide a wide range of supplementary services, including questioning witnesses, documenting ignition factors, meeting with the press, setting up a relief center for displaced residents, and beginning to inventory and store salvaged property for residents who were still at work or out of town.

Springtime in northern Maine usually means an increase in the number of grass and brush fires in the dried-out vegetation while the ground itself is still wet from melted snow. Even fourwheel-drive vehicles had trouble with the wet soil, necessitating the old method of attack on foot with pump cans and brooms.

I read your article on computers in the January issue with great interest. As the retired chief of the University of Connecticut Fire Department, I have been interested for several years in the use of computers for the fire service. I have been particularly interested in their use for computer-aided dispatching, prefire planning and department administration.
