Alternate Water Sources Needed At Fire During Severe Drought

When the water reservoir for the Borough of Ashland, Pa., started drying up during the drought last November, Fire Chief Thomas Towers and other borough officials began searching for alternate supplies for fire fighting. Several sources were found or rigged.

Indiana Governor Robert Orr has appointed former Indianapolis Fire Chief William J. Patterson to be director of Indiana’s Department of Civil Defense and Emergency Management. Patterson replaces Milton M. Mitnick, who retired after eight years as director.

Joseph Moreland created a stir at the spring conference of the IAFC Metropolitan Committee when he deplored the failure of the many segments of the fire service to speak with one voice on vital issues. The acting administrator of the United States Fire Administration—who was reassigned shortly after his remarks—saw the present fluid situation in Washington as a “critical opportunity for the fire service to get its act together.”

An attempt by employees to extinguish a small fire before notifying the fire department plus the lack of sufficient water pressure resulted in a major blaze which destroyed the second floor of an egg processing plant in East Windsor Township, N.J.
