The Round Table

The Round Table

As one of the first students to attend the National Fire Academy: (1) How did the course you took there compare to other courses you have taken in your fire service career?, (2) Were you able to apply this knowledge to your own work?, (3) Did you impart this knowledge to members of your department or others?, and (4) How did you find the accommodations? Richard A. Marinucci, Fire Fighter, Farmington Hills, Mich.: I have attended two courses at the National Fire Academy and have found both classes to be as good or better than the classes in the fire science program at a local college.

New Air Supply Unit For Philadelphia F.D.

Philadelphia fire fighters won’t have to carry numerous replacement SCBA cylinders back and forth anymore during extended operations in high-rise buildings, subway tunnels or other hard-to-reach areas. Even on the 34th floor of a fire building, the air cylinders can be refilled on the spot through a 400-foot high-pressure line connected to the department’s new portable compressor—Air Unit 1—placed in service on Jan. 26 by Fire Commissioner Joseph R. Rizzo.

Carbonized Wood Ignition Determined in 4-Alarm Fire

“Pyrophoric” literally means “air burning.” It refers to the tendency of certain materials to take fire spontaneously upon exposure to air without any other specific ignition source. This isn’t quite the same way that spontaneous combustion takes place in hay, rags, or metal turnings, with which most fire fighters are familiar.

From the Publishers Desk

We have heard of a number of combination fire and police arson squads, but there is one combined fire and police effort that aims to run arson right out of the country. Well, maybe not exactly out of the country, but the participants will certainly pound it into the ground. No previous attack on this crime has required so much physical stamina and determination.
