Anaheim Fire Fighters Give $10,000 To Bum Unit

The Anaheim Fire Fighters Association made a $10,000 donation to the Burn Treatment Center at the University of California at Irvine Medical Center (UCIMC) during an April 29 benefit concert at the Anaheim Convention Center. Engineer Jerry Hart, president of the association, said the check brings total contributions by the group to the burn unit to slightly more than $100,000 during the past eight years.

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) 1979 Media Awards Contest was held recently in Washington D.C. First prize winners went to articles in the Bloomington, Ill., Daily Pantagraph and Toronto, Ont., Star; photos in the Racine, Wis., Journal-Times and Chicago, Ill., Sun-Times; a series of programs on Station KGW-TV of Portland, Or.; and a documentary series on Radio Station WMJW in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

Fiscal restraint, the escalating cost of fire apparatus, arson, mask safety and a report on the United States Fire Administration were among the many topics covered by the Metropolitan Committee of the International Association of Fire Chiefs at its annual meeting which was held in Memphis, May 5-7.

How Fund Drive Built 5-Bay Station

An old-fashioned fund drive financed the new five-bay fire station in the small farming community of Laurens, Iowa. The successful effort could set a pattern for other volunteer fire departments in the wake of Proposition 13 fever. A neighboring town already has its own solicitation under way after the failure of a fire station bond issue, and other Iowa fire districts reportedly are considering the idea.
