First-In Officer’s Decisions Set Pattern for Fire Attack

Decisions made by the first-in officer at fire are extremely important because they establish a pattern for the development of the fire attack by later arriving chief officers. If the first-in officer makes the proper decisions, the incoming chief can expand on those decisions as he issues orders to implement the appropriate strategy. Conversely, if the initial decisions are inadequate—or just plain bad—then the chief officer must issue new orders to working companies and in some cases even call in additional companies to alter the pattern of attack to fit the strategy he has selected.

BioMarine Industries has announced the development of a positive-pres sure, NIOSH approved, closed-circuit, self-contained breathing apparatus. Called the BioPak 60P, its breathing resistance is less than 2 inches of water column. The BioPak 60 has a 60-minute rating.
The Round Table

The Round Table

No matter what scientific mumbo-jumbo was used to justify it, the manning level for a fire company has traditionally been arrived at “by guess and by God.” More recently the manning level has been arrived at by the amount of money available to pay the fire fighters. Neither method is, of course, satisfactory. With this in mind, what in your opinion, and for your department, is the proper manning level for a ladder company and an engine company?

Emergency Door Stop

A device to prevent self-locking doors from closing and possibly trapping fire fighters during search and rescue operations has been developed by members of the Orlando, Fla., Fire Department, reports W. Lamar Smith, engineer in the department’s training division. The Big-O safety door block, shown above, is made of bent pieces of metal, riveted together and faced with carpeting to prevent marring door surfaces.
