3 Factories, 5 Houses Destroyed By Fast-Spreading Incendiary Fire

A fast-spreading incendiary fire caused by two boys swept through two blocks of Paterson, N. J., on April 29, destroying three factories and five wood-frame houses. The blaze damaged three other factories, three houses and a lumberyard. The fire was the worst experienced in Paterson since the conflagration of 1902, when over 500 buildings were lost.

Change in Tactics Required To Preserve Arson Evidence

With the nationally reported increase in the number of incendiary fires, it is time to take a look at the changes in tactics that should be made when there is suspicion of arson. Obviously, the first objective remains to extinguish the fire, but added to this objective is the necessity to preserve and protect as much arson evidence as possible without endangering life or property.

Recognition, Protection of Evidence Are Basic Steps to Arson Prosecution

There is a long established judicial requirement that the corpus delicti of the crime of arson must be established before prosecution can take place. It follows that if an arsonist is to be successfully prosecuted, it is necessary that an early identification of the incendiary origin of the fire be made, followed by step-by-step photographing of physical evidence and the preservation of that evidence for laboratory examination.
