The Hartford Insurance Group has prepared a new fire prevention and fire safety manual for teachers participating in the Junior Fire Marshal program. The 64-page manual, “Teaching About Fire,” emphasizes practical information that can help prevent fires and save lives when fire occurs. The JFM program, which celebrated its 30th anniversary, is designed for children in kindergarten through third grade.

Arson Task Force For San Francisco

About half of San Francisco’s annual fire loss total of $5.7 million is caused by arsonists—vandals, maniacs, fire-for-hire and revenge-seeking “torches.” Over the past 15 years, says Fire Chief Andrew Casper, arson has jumped 789 percent and at least 40 deaths have been caused by the crimes. “These are homicides, pure and simple,” Casper said.

Asked to assist in putting out a blaze on Vashon Island (not a part of the City of Seattle), the good-hearted fire department responded quickly. Vashon Island is a small, picturesque piece of land in Puget Sound with a small wintertime population and a much larger one during the summer months.

Existence of Academy and NFPCA Threatened by President’s Budget

News coming out of Washington during the week before Christmas indicated that President Carter’s budget would not recommend any funding for the renovation or operation of the National Fire Academy. On top of this, it was further learned that the President’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) would recommend that still another survey be undertaken to determine the need and purpose of a National Fire Academy.

In order to combat the increase in arson fires, the three men in the prevention bureau, have been sent to seminars and schools on arson investigation.
