A woman was critically injured in a fire at a duplex in Attleboro Sunday morning and a man inside the home as well as a pair of police officers who rushed into the burning structure were treated for smoke inhalation, the Attleboro Fire Department said in a statement.
A pair of Attleboro police officers were the first people to arrive at 563 Mendon Road after a fire there was reported at 9:13 a.m. Sunday, according to the statement from Fire Chief Chief Scott T. Lachance. The officers found two people inside the home and rushed inside, pulling both people out before firefighters arrived.
One resident, a man, was treated for smoke inhalation, as were the two police officers. The other resident, a woman in her 40s, had severe burns and was brought to a Rhode Island Hospital with critical injuries, according to the statement. The man and the police officers were taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to two rooms in the house and just one side of the duplex. The residents of the other unit in the duplex were home at the time of the fire and temporarily displaced but allowed to return home later Sunday morning.
The fire caused roughly $100,000 in damage to the home, according to the statement.
The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
