Woman Medical Officer

New York City Fire Commissioner Charles J. Hynes recently announced the appointment of Dr. Kerry J. Kelly of Staten Island as a medical officer, the first woman to hold the post in the fire department’s 116-year history.

Hynes said, “With this appointment, Dr. Kerry Kelly not only brings with her an outstanding background as a fine young physician, but also the empathy and sense of belonging that come from being a member of a now fourth-generation fire department family.”

Kelly is a graduate of Brown University Medical School and a former chief resident physician at the Downstate Medical Center/Kings County Medical Center.

Kelly’s father is Lieutenant William Michael Kelly, Jr. of Ladder Co. 82, Staten Island. Her grandfather, the late Capt. William Michael Kelly, also served on Staten Island.
