Winners of AFSA’s 2009 National Scholarship Contest Announced

The American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA) is pleased to offer its support, through its online scholarship program, www.AFSAScholarship.org, to ten lucky graduating high school seniors as they pursue their higher education goals. These national winners were randomly selected from 23,398 students who entered to receive a one-time $2,000 AFSA scholarship payable to their respective college, university or trade school. This online scholarship contest awards ten (10) – $2,000 prizes annually.

The ten national winners for 2009 are: Michael Barrett, Orlando, Fla.; Matt Cassidy, Fostoria, Ohio; Alexander Chism, Petaluma, Calif.; Sonnett Davies, Spanish Fork, Utah; Coreen Donaldson, Riverside, Calif.; Kiera Edwards, Menifee, Calif.; Jessica Garcia, San Bernardino, Calif.; Angela Imbesi, Mesa, Ariz.; Erica Kaczmarczyk, Mahanoy City, Pa.; and Ashton Warner, Kailua, Hawaii.

Since its creation in 1996, the AFSA Scholarship Contest has sought to promote the scholarship outside of the fire sprinkler industry in the hope of reaching students who may otherwise never have recognized the importance of automatic fire protection.

Now in its 13th year, the AFSA scholarship continues to grow attracting over 23,000 applicants from across the nation during the 2008-09 school year alone. A pattern that AFSA hopes will continue, as more seniors login next year – starting in August 2009 – for their shot at ten more $2,000 prizes.

To be eligible, applicants must be a current high school senior planning to attend a U.S. college, university or trade school in the upcoming fall. Applicants are required to read a passage about fire sprinklers – which describes their history, how they operate to save lives and property, and the types of careers that are available in the industry – and take a ten-question reading comprehension test. For each question answered correctly, the student receives one entry into a drawing for one of ten $2,000 scholarships. A total of 10 entries per applicant into the drawing are possible.

The AFSA Scholarship is open to U.S. citizens and legal residents. The 2010 contest will begin in August 2009. For more information, visit www.afsascholarship.org or follow us on Twitter at @AFSAScholarship.
