Whitakers (NC) firefighters recently paid tribute to their former retired Fire Chief Charles Hunter Sr. with a fire department funeral. Hunter passed away on March 8, 2016.

Firefighters from Nash, Edgecombe, and Halifax counties and many of his friends paid farewell to him at the grave site. Ladder companies from the Halifax and Enfield fire departments displayed a huge American flag at the cemetery, as the casket was being transported on top of the Whitakers fire truck as it came by at the Hunter Family Cemetery in Whitakers on March 12, 2016.

Chief Hunter  was a member of the Whitakers Volunteer Fire Department from 1967 until retiring in 1994. He served as assistant chief from 1979-1982 and fire chief from 1983-1991. He was vice president from 1983-1984 and president from 1984-1985 of the Nash County Fire & Rescue Association.
