The West Hamlin (WV) Volunteer Fire Department, which protects a 100-percent rural area, purchased its EMERGENCY ONE rescue vehicle to handle rescue, rehab, and command center duties, according to Chief Phillip Skeens II.


Features/Equipment:

  • FREIGHTLINER FL-80 chassis, 216-inch wheelbase, and two-seat cab;
  • CUMMINS ISC 300-hp diesel engine with ALLISON MD 3060P automatic transmission;
  • 18-foot walk-in body with four SCBA seats and command desk;
  • five HANNAY reels (two electric cord, two air, one hydraulic);
  • RAMSEY six-ton, front-mounted winch;
  • MAKO four-cylinder, 4,500-psi air cascade system with fill station: and
  • light and power with WINCO 25-kw PTO generator, two FEDERAL Nightfighter spot/floodlights (on front of body), and two HAVIS SHIELDS tripod floodlights (on rear of body).

The Kenai (AK) Fire Department uses this SVI TRUCKS engine support unit, backed up by a pumper, to respond to wildland fires, according to Chief Scott Walden. It is also used for mop-up purposes after fires (freeing up larger pumpers) and supports investigations with lighting, tools, and small water capability.


Features/Equipment:

  • FORD F-550 Super Duty chassis with 176-inch wheelbase and five seats with storage between front ones;
  • FORD 7.3L 235-hp diesel engine with 4R-100 automatic transmission and four-wheel drive;
  • 10-foot body with WATEROUS PB-18 3025 Vanguard slip-in single-stage, 250-gpm (at 70 psi) pump with midship booster reel with one-inch hose and slip-in 300-gallon CFP water tank;
  • RAMSEY six-ton, front-mounted winch; and
  • light and power with AURAGEN five-kw generator (belt-operated off motor), two GFE Extenda-Lites in rear, nine WHELEN fixed scene lights on body, and HANNAY electric cord reel.


The Liverpool (PA) Fire Department’s KME apparatus functions as a rescue pumper to replace an older pumper and a rescue truck. It is fully functional for both types of duties, explains Chief Larry Sarver.

  • Excel LFD chassis with 215-inch wheelbase and 10-inch raised roof cab with 10 seats;
  • CUMMINS ISM 450-hp diesel engine with ALLISON HD 4060P automatic transmission;

  • flatback body with coffin compartments that carry nine pails of AFFF;
  • 4.4-cubic-foot oil absorbent hopper with hose to driver’s side rear compartment;
  • internal storage for two hard suctions, two pike poles, and 50 feet of ground ladders;
  • AMKUS rescue system;
  • RUDD ice chain system; and
  • light and power with A.M.P.S. 10-kw hydraulic PTO generator, HAVIS SHIELDS floodlight over cab windshield, four FRC floodlights (two pole-raise behind cab, two tripod on rear), six WELDON fixed scene lights on sides and rear of body, and HANNAY electric cord reel in rear.

The Sunriver (OR) Fire Department designed this PIERCE pumper to protect its jurisdiction, a private destination resort community with a four-star resort, two golf courses, and wildland interface, explains Assistant Fire Chief Rod Bjorvik.

  • UPF 750-gallon water and 20-gallon A and B foam tanks;
  • DOVER rear roll-up compartment door;
  • PIERCE hydraulic ladder rack; and
  • light and power with HONDA six-kw gasoline generator, two HAVIS SHIELDS midship telescoping floodlights, and two WHELEN fixed scene lights on cab.

The Fairton Fire Company in Fairfield Township, New Jersey, has in service this FERRARA rescue pumper, which replaces a small rescue truck and a pumper. Chief Steve Bateman explains that the company performs numerous extrications and wanted a unit that would carry more equipment and pump foam.

  • UPF 750-gallon water and two 25-gallon foam tanks (A and B foams) with through-the-tank ladder and backboard storage;
  • WARN four-ton portable winch with four receivers;
  • HURST rescue system with six HANNAY reels (four hydraulic, one electric, and one air); and
  • light and power with HARRISON 30-kw PTO hydraulic generator, WILL BURT six-kw light tower, and 10 fixed scene lights (two WHELEN Model 810s on sides of cab, four Model 97s and four HAVIS SHIELDS Alpha 2000 on sides of body).


The Utica (NY) Fire Department uses its SEAGRAVE Apollo quint to provide elevated platform service and water supply to its downtown district, according to Chief Frank P. Mazza.

  • DETROIT Series 60 470-hp diesel engine with ALLISON HD 4060P automatic transmission;

  • ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors; and
  • light and power with A.M.P.S. 10-kw PTO generator, four CHURCHVILLE Safe-T-Lights (two on platform, two behind cab), and two WHELEN fixed scene light on sides of cab.
