TX Firefighter Loses Arm in Accident

A Pinewood volunteer firefighter lost her left arm when she was struck at the scene of a tanker explosion Thursday near Sour Lake, Texas, according to a report on beaumontenterprise.com (http://bit.ly/sqVuTQ).

Theresa Wigley of Hardin County Emergency Management said the firefighter, Kimberly Huckabee, lost her left arm as a result of the accident. Surgeons were trying to reconnect Huckabee’s fingers on her right hand, Wigley said. Huckabee also suffered head injuries after being hit.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, which contained crude oil, apparently fell asleep and ran off the road. Subsequent crashes also occurred.

There have been a number of firefighters injured while operating at the scene of vehicle accidents this year. Read more about scene safety and other issues of motor vehicle accidents in Mike Ciamp’s On Fire column, “Learning from Experience.”
