TX Fallen Firefighters Monument Runs Out of Room for More Names

A memorial dedicated to remembering Texas volunteer firefighters who died in the line of duty has run out of room to add more names, including those killed in the recent West (TX) fertilizer plant explosion.

The monument is located on the Texas Capitol grounds in Austin, according to a USA Today report (http://usat.ly/12bBYS4), and is one of the oldest monuments in the city and one of most prestigious recognitions of fallen volunteer firefighters.

The last name added to the monument was in 2011, when Wharton Volunteer Fire Department Captain Thomas Araguz III died battling a fire at an egg farm in Boling.

The State Firemen’s and Fire Marshals’ Association of Texas needs to raise more than $100,000 to build an expansion to the memorial.
