An Ellis County couple was hospitalized Friday morning after their house exploded in the middle of the night, according to the Waxahachie fire department.

Waxahachie Fire-Rescue Chief Ricky Boyd said the explosion happened just after 2 a.m. in the 170 block of Ike Road, just outside the city limits of Waxahachie. Boyd said two people, an older couple who lived in the house, were taken to a hospital after being pulled from the debris of the home. He said he did not have an update on their condition Friday evening.

Boyd said a Waxahachie fire captain who lives nearby was awakened by the explosion and rushed to the scene to provide aid. Billy Vest, the fire captain, told KXAS-TV (NBC5) that a woman had been thrown from the home by the explosion but was walking around when he arrived.

Vest also said the woman’s husband was trapped under a pile of debris and his injuries included burns, NBC5 reported.

Vest also told NBC5 it is a miracle the couple survived the blast.

“All I can think is God was looking over them, man, because you can look at it,” Vest said. “If it can tear that kind of stuff up, there were two human bodies in there, it’s pretty wild they survived like that.”

Family members said the couple is expected to survive, according to NBC5.

Boyd said the cause of the explosion is under investigation by the Ellis County Fire Marshal’s office.
