According to a report from NBC10, two members of the Dennis (MA) Fire Department (DFD) suffered non-life-threatening injuries after falling into a basement through a burned-out hole in the floor at an apartment fire response Monday morning.
The DFD was dispatched to a fire in the four-unit apartment complex at 475 Route 28 in West Dennis around 10:14 a.m. On arrival, they were met with smoke showing from one unit.
One DFD member fell into the basement upon entering the home, resulting in a Mayday call. Other firefighters were able to force open a rear bulkhead door leading to the basement, helping the injured firefighter escape to safety with help.
Moments later, another DFD firefighter slipped and fell into the same hole but became tangled in some wires, stopping his descent into the basement.
One firefighter was transported to Cape Cod Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the other was evaluated on scene.
Fire departments from Yarmouth, Harwich, Brewster, Chatham, Hyannis, and Orleans assisted the DFD on scene.
DFD officials said no one was home at the time of the fire, as the apartment’s resident was working a nightshift.
The Massachusetts state fire marshal’s office was on scene to investigate. The cause of the fire is now under investigation, but fire officials said there was evidence of an electrical problem inside the hallway wall. The fire is not considered suspicious.
