According to a report from ABC7, a two-alarm fire erupted in New York City’s Chinatown neighborhood just before 4 a.m. Friday morning, killing two people.
The incident occurred on the fifth floor of an apartment building on Mulberry Street. Fire Department of New York (FDNY) crews responded to heavy fire conditions, with flames shooting from the window, and the response was further hindered by heavy clutter in the apartment.
On arrival, FDNY firefighters went door to door to evacuate residents from the six-story building. Four residents and two firefighters sustained minor injuries.
The victims were a 52-year-old man, thought to be disabled and found dead by firefighters, and his 91-year-old mother, who was transported to New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The son’s 67-year-old home health aide escaped the apartment and is now being interviewed.
