According to a report from WPTV, two people died Sunday night when their single-engine aircraft crashed in a field approximately 1,100 feet from the runway at the Palm Beach County Park Airport near Lantana, Florida.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue (PBCFR) responders were dispatched to the airport at around 9:30 p.m. for the reported crash, discovering the Diamond DA40 aircraft in flames.
A PBCFR spokesperson said crews brought the fire under control quickly, but the two men inside the craft were pronounced dead at the scene.
Members of the National Transportation Safety Board were at Palm Beach County Park Airport Monday morning to look into the cause of the accident. The Federal Aviation Administration is also investigating.
According to FlightAware, based on the plane’s tail number, the plane took off at 7:23 p.m. flight records show the aircraft was coming from Williston, Florida. The plane crashed across the street near multiple apartment complexes.
FlightAware showed the plane started the day at 11 a.m. Sunday in Henderson City, Kentucky.
A man on scene who was interviewed by the media said one of the victims was his flight instructor, while the other was a friend he met while learning to fly.
Palm Beach County Park Airport services fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. It does not have an air traffic control tower, according to the airport’s Web site.
