Suffolk (VA) Firefighters Contend with Working Fires Linked to Cooking Accidents

Suffolk firefighters on scene at a fire

Suffolk (VA) firefighters were kept busy with a pair of cooking-related structure fires over the past weekend.

On Friday, October 14, 2022, Suffolk Fire & Rescue responded to the 200 Block of Pine Street in Downtown for a structure fire.

Dispatched at 8:16 a.m., Battalion 1, Engine 1, Engine 2, Rescue 1, Medic 1, and EMS 1 arrived on scene at 8:18 a.m. to find smoke showing from a two-and-half story residential home that was converted into two apartments. Several adults were outside the structure and three adults were still in the first floor apartment.

Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior fire attack and performed a search of the structure. The three adults on the first floor were escorted out of their apartment as firefighters found a fire on the second-floor apartment in the kitchen area of the building. One adult female was evaluated at the scene for injuries related to the fire but was not transported. All searches were completed and the fire was extinguished.

No firefighters were injured, and the fire was placed under control 8:34 a.m.

On Sunday, October 16, 2022, Suffolk fire units again responded Downtown to the 1200 Block of Blythewood Lane.

Dispatched at 6:33 p.m., Ladder 3 arrived at 6:36 p.m. to find smoke showing from the front door of a single-story detached residential home. All occupants were outside the structure when firefighters arrived. Firefighters entered the front door and found the kitchen on fire.  A search was performed and firefighters verified that everyone was out of the structure. The fire was contained to the kitchen area of the home, but the home did suffer smoke damage. No civilian or firefighters were injured.

In both of these fires, the cause was determined to be accidental related to cooking.
