Starting a SWAT Medic Program

The Firefighters Support Foundation’s (FSF) newest training program is now available. “Our Starting a SWAT Medic program is must viewing for any fire, EMS or police agency considering adding a tactical medic to a law enforcement SWAT team,” says FSF President David Kenik. The program consists of a 45-minute video presentation and an accompanying PowerPoint presentation.

The presenter is Battalion Chief Tom McGowan of the Medford (OR) Fire Department. Chief McGowan started out as a Sheriff’s Deputy before choosing the fire service as a career path. With his background as a SWAT operator and paramedic, as well his extensive experience in the fire service, he is uniquely qualified to present this program

Starting a SWAT Medic is not about how to be a SWAT Medic–there are many training programs available that address that subject. Rather it addresses an unmet need by describing how an agency should go about starting a SWAT medic program. It address: Who needs to be involved? What are the key considerations? What are the pitfalls? How do labor groups play a key role? What kind of person do you want? Do you start with a paramedic and train them in SWAT or vice versa? What does it cost? How long does it take? And much more.

The program is free to all members of public safety and  emergency management agencies.
