Joseph Bove, 53, had been with the Spotswood Volunteer Fire Department for about 30 years.

The fire department responded to the call about 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. Bove was said to have spent time running tools from a truck to the location of the leak.

“They are reporting this as a line-of-duty death because it’s within 24 hours of answering the fire call,” Mayor Nicholas Poliseno said.
