Shelter-in-Place, Evacuation Orders Issued After GA Chemical Plant Fire

According to a report from News4JAX, one firefighter was injured and a “Code Red” was ordered to residents in the Hickory Bluff and Sanctuary Cove, Georgia, areas after an industrial fire struck the Symrise plant in Glynn County at about 4 a.m. Monday morning.

The plant was evacuated, along with neighborhoods within a one-mile radius of the plant including Hickory Bluff, Royal Oaks, and Satilla Shores as well as the area east of I-95 (Exit 26). Residents located within three miles of the plant were advised to shelter in place.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries. The fire has since been contained. The Glynn County Board of Commissioners said wind shift is a concern.

Residents without anywhere to go need to move to the Kingsland Recreation Center, located behind Camden County High School, according to the Camden County Sheriff’s Office’s Public Information Officer.

Hazmat crews from Jacksonville were spotted at the scene and were assisting fire crews.
